ECU survey: How can universities support staff and students experiencing mental health difficulties?
ECU is currently surveying the views of staff and students on how universities can support people experiencing mental health difficulties. In particular, we want to gain an understanding of how universities can:
• develop an environment which encourages staff and students to let the university know they are experiencing mental health difficulties and receive targeted support
• proactively ensure that their courses, the work environment, their facilities and services are accessible to students experiencing mental health difficulties
Responses to the staff and student surveys will be invaluable in helping us develop materials to promote an inclusive environment supportive of mental health in universities
Staff survey: How can universities support staff experiencing mental health difficulties?
Student survey: How can universities support students experiencing mental health difficulties?
Please support this work by completing the survey and also encouraging any staff and student networks and/or individuals to do so.
The survey will be open until Friday 12 April
For further details of the project, please see the ECU project page.

Dear Mental Wealth UK Supporters

University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day takes place this Wednesday, 20th February.

As you will remember from our January Newsletter, we have teamed up with UMHAN (University Mental Health Advisers Network) to make University Mental Health And Wellbeing Day bigger and better in 2013. The national event was started last year by UMHAN to focus efforts on promoting the mental health of people who live and work in Higher Education settings. Many Universities, Students’ Union’s and Mental Wealth Groups have spent the last couple of months preparing some fantastic events. We’re delighted that many students found our info pack about the day useful in planning their activities. Don’t worry if your institution hasn’t been able to plan anything yet, or if you do not work at a University - it’s never too late to get involved and there are plenty of ways for everyone in the wider community to engage with this important initiative.

Read on to find out how you can help to build up the momentum and impact of University Mental Health Day...

1. Please share and join our ‘Thunderclap’

It takes just 20 seconds to sign up to the thunderclap (a mass Tweet and Facebook post) for University Mental Health Day. By joining you will become one of hundreds of people across the UK tweeting or posting about all at the same time! It’s a great way to spread the message to thousands of people that if they are struggling, they are not alone and support is available.

If we don't get 250 sign ups by the end of Tuesday 19th, it won’t get sent out at all, so publicising it is crucial and we need your help. The more people you can get to sign up the better. If you work in a university please encourage your colleagues and communications team to get behind this, and share it through mailing lists and your Facebook / twitter accounts. If you could sign up for it on both your Facebook and twitter accounts, that would be even better! Follow this link to join in:

If you / your University has planned something to mark the day, please tell us the details (if you haven’t already informed us or UMHAN). Whether its a social media push or blog, an event, or if you are helping out with your Uni's wellbeing stalls, we need to know about it. Everything you do will be blogged about from the university mental health day blog. (Link will be shared shortly) Send us a brief summary and any links to web pages to help promote your activities to: home[at]mentalwealthuk.com

Hi, I’m a Psychology student at Loughborough University conducting research into eating, exercise, attachment and self-injury attitudes and behaviours. This research may have important implications for helping us to identify individuals at risk of self-injury behaviours

If you are female, aged 18-35 and either exercise with moderate intensity (e.g. cycling) for at least 150-minutes per week OR exercise vigorously (e.g. running) for at least 75-minutes per week, I would be very grateful if you could spend 15 minutes completing this online questionnaire. All responses will remain anonymous. A link to the questionnaire is provided below.

This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee at Loughborough University. If you would like any further information or have any questions about the study, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Thank you

We are pleased to let you know that we are now running a Peer Support Social Group alongside Loughborough HeadsUp! 2013 - 14 - If you would like to join us or would like more information please contact myself Liz Thackeray Davies on [email protected] or Clare Hodgson on [email protected]
