The USA and the Middle East after 1945
❗NEW for 2025 - on campus and online via zoom available❗

The Middle East has rarely been absent from the world's headlines since the end of World War Two. Next to East-West relations, its conflicts have provided the most intractable set of issues in international affairs. Surprisingly prior to 1945, the US was viewed as a benign and philanthropic power by middle easterners.

However, over the past seventy years, the United States has become the unquestioned target of those bent on attacking the west, and Anti-Americanism is a pervasive feature of modern Middle East public opinion. How and why did this transformation come about? This class will offer a history of U.S. political involvement in the Middle East from World War II to the present day, from Iran in the 1950s, through the Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Gulf War of 1991 and the devastation of 9/11 and contemporary Gaza.

Due to the popularity of the Weave Workshop class at our satellite location, Lanark World Heritage Site - we are offering it again in July!

E301: Weave Workshop

The workshop aims to give a contemporary flare to the age-old craft practice of hand weaving, specifically with cashmere. This is achieved through a communal, material driven journey in the home of Lanark’s mills. Lanark itself has a rich history for yarn production, specifically the art of hand spinning wool into a viable craft material with applications in the fashion and outdoor/country industries.

The session will commence with a brief overview of the material, its relevance to the area of Lanark and its origins within high-end fashion wear. A quick introduction to the history of the New Lanark Mill and its relevance in contemporary society and craftwork. The tutors, from Glasgow School of Art, will demonstrate to the participants the basic weaving technique using cardboard squares to get the plain weave technique under the hands of the participants. Spend about an hour in a relaxed social setting building these weaves using either Alex Begg wool or New Lanark wool and DIY cardboard looms. Participants are encouraged to draw from their weaves, paint over, join together, stack, etc.
