I’m 50 years young and officially menopausal. I’m now at risk of cardiac heart disease and osteoporosis. During this time my muscle mass has decreased and I have gained weight around my midlif 😬. My goals now are to gain as much muscle mass as I can, eat well, hydrate, sleep well, laugh lots and do stupid things.. ask if you want to know more 🤣. You only get one life. With obesity rates increasing and the NHS under considerable stress. There’s lots of talk about GLP1 the weight loss jabs. What are they. There are 5 different types. Which one a health professional prescribes Depends on if you have any other health issues. GLP-1 refers to glucagon-like peptide-1, a naturally occurring hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar and appetite. GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are a class of medications that mimic the actions of GLP-1 and are used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. When you cut your calorie intake you loose muscle and fat. To prevent this a high protein and GI diet are recommended and exercise. The recommendations are 2-3 resistance sessions a week. Which should include Cv training. Flexibility, mobility. Education is also important to prevent weight regain when the medication is stopped. I am now a fully qualified GPL1 fitness instructor. So I’m doing it again, back to learning and getting the old grey matter 🧠 working again. I am a lady of a certain age who has been on the perimenopause/ menopause train myself. I have lots of friends and clients who are going through it too. My aim is to educate and support women who feel HRT isn’t the way forward or feel they can’t. There are lots of scary stories out there. I will be setting up some group sessions, to offer acupuncture which is great from helping with symptoms, small group pt sessions, nutrition advice and also to build a community of strong independent and brave ladies. The first myth I would like to address is I can’t take HRT because I’ve had cancer or a high risk of cancer.. ❌ not true. There are do many different types of HRT. You have to make sure you. Are in the correct one. Talk to a menopause / gynaecologist specialist DR. Oestrogen is needed for all the bodies organs and helps cells function.

When I was looking through some old photos found this one taken of my client when she first started training with me sept 2023. I decided to re create the photo in her session tonight. As you can see there’s a massive difference even though will admit she’s full of cheese and wine after Christmas. This is what consistency, hard work at the gym and eating a healthy and balanced diet looks like. Rome wasn’t built in a day and weight loss isn’t always a fast process. Case study.
Someone who drives a lot of hours. Admits her seating position isn’t correct. Suffering with neck and shoulder stiffness and pain. After a thought testing. I treated for scapular instability due to muscle imbalance. With acupuncture, manual therapy and also mobilisations in the shoulder joint and scapular. Received this feed back this evening. This client has been suffering with back pain and intermittent sciatica pain for years. I so far seen them for 2 sessions. This was the message I have just received after a very long haul flight. This person has also been completing the rehab exercises prescribed There’s no need for anyone to be suffering in pain. Treatment sometimes takes time and what suits one person might not work for another so you have to be patient too.

Let’s talk about “The weight Loss jabs”
With an increase in obesity rates of 30% in the past year, I agree something needs to be done. You should only be allowed to be have this jab if your BMI is over 30%. Don’t get me started on BMI readings as well. So how does it work? The injection gives you a hormone that stops your hunger response in the brain. This in theory is good, however there are lots of side effects, nausea, sickness fatigue and many more. My biggest issue with this type of approach is. The body is in a calorie deficit. (That is the only way you will loose weight) what happens when you starve the body of nutrients, it goes straight for the muscle first then fat. You’ll loose weight obviously but what about your body’s bone health? And general nutrition you must eat a very healthy balanced and protein packed diet along side it. I worry that in 5 years there will be massive repercussions from this. I think we’ll have more issues with osteoporosis, Sarcopenia, and mental health and many more complications. Do your reasearch please 😢

What is the difference between a Sports Therapist and a Physiotherapist?

Both sports therapists and physiotherapists are trained to treat musculoskeletal disorders. Dealing with pain and injury via hands on treatment and exercise therapy to rehabilitate and return to function. Both sports therapy and physiotherapy aim to restore, maintain and maximise movement, and increase quality of life.

Both sports therapists and physiotherapists are trained to:

Assess and diagnose injury.
Create treatment plans to maximise physical function.
Implement rehabilitation programmes.
Advise patients on healthy lifestyle habits.
But there are some key differences in the two professions:

Physiotherapists have a broader knowledge base, which also takes in cardiovascular, neurological and respiratory arms of physiotherapy. Sports Therapy is focused primarily on the musculoskeletal rehabilitation element of health and illness.
Sports Therapists often have more covered in sporting environments and exercise-based therapy during university, which builds a good competency of returning patients to their required level of physical performance.
