As part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival, Dr Joe Allen (SSESW) joined Queen’s colleagues Dr Eiman Abdel Meguid and Dr Felicity Agwu Kalu from the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences (MDSBS) in conducting a series of interactive and practical sessions on breathing, resuscitation and swallowing. The related processes in the human body were explained in simple but detailed terms to participants in this public session using interactive multimedia presentations and quizzes developed by Joe. Props and models based on human anatomy and detailed anatomical explanations and practical demonstrations were provided by colleagues from MDBS.

Many congratulations to SSESW doctoral student Jianzhou Ni who passed her viva, with corrections. Her thesis title is “A Mixed-method Study on Chinese Elementary Students’ Academic Experiences: Investigating Academic Emotions, Teacher Self-efficacy, and Family Involvement”. PGCE Biology students took a fascinating fieldtrip to the Anaerobic Digester and the Environment and Renewable Energy Centre at AFBI, Hillsborough. PGCE Science lead Dr Karen Kerr said: “The visit was an important part of the ongoing strategy and action plan for embedding Educational for Sustainable Development into our PGCE Science programme. Knowing and understanding that such excellent research is on our doorstep is an important part of our strategy, so our future science teachers can inspire all the young people they will teach throughout their careers. A very big thank you to our hosts at AFBI!”

Congratulations to our Social Work academic Patricia Nicholl! She was awarded her doctorate with minor corrections after successfully defending her thesis in a recent viva. Thesis title: ‘The views and experiences of primary school teachers regarding personal education plans (PEPs) for children in care in Northern Ireland’. Patricia’s doctoral study was supervised by School of SSESW colleagues Professor Karen Winter and Dr Danielle Mackle.
