Are you a parent of a teen?

Have you noticed their grades slipping over the last few months?

If the answer is 'yes' - then please don't leave it until the last minute to try to address the issue thinking it will go away - it's very unlikely - there is a reason why grades are slipping. It could be anything from:-

Poor teaching
Class disruption from other students
Teacher absence or change of teacher
Lack of understanding the subject and shy/reluctant to ask for help
Emotional problems - anxiety/stress

The best thing you can do as a parent is to ask what's going on- take action NOW. Find out why your child is not performing as well as they are able to then look for appropriate support - it may be academic - it may be emotional or it might be time management skills that are needed.

Results at GCSE are really important for having a bearing on later choices such as college, university or even the workplace.
There is a lot of support available for your teen - just ask

My video was about self belief and the key pints are:-
1) Identify your strengths - we are all good at something but most of us are not good at everything
2) Set goals - small steps at a time - rather than one gigantic leap
3) Be mindful of the language you use to yourself and others around - negative messages get absorbed by the subconscious - try to use positive language to yourself at al times

Most of us want to succeed but there are certain keys factors that need to be in place to ensure success whether it's passing an exam, getting into the university of our choice or chieving the goal you set yourself

When I first started my tuition business back in 2006- we still used
• Phone directories to find businesses
• Newsagents to advertise with our business cards in the window
• Landlines which were a common means of getting in touch with someone whether business or personal.
We didn’t have …
• Social media sites in the UK as they were in their infancy
• Smart phones
• Video calls as we know them today
• A vast choice of electronic messaging systems apart from email
And we certainly didn’t have AI
What we did do is talk to each other more – especially face to face where we can pick up subtle cues about meaning and communication. Now I’m not saying the advance in technology is a bad thing – far from it but let’s face it – most of us – especially young people would be completely lost without their smart phone and the numerous social media platforms.
We now have the latest tech development - AI – where robots can give you an instant run down on a topic or a person, write an article or even a book for you! We also have avatars which are getting increasingly realistic and soon we won’t be able to tell the difference between the real and the created version.
Don’t get me wrong- these developments are amazing and can be really useful to business in saving time and being more efficient, but our brains are muscles – you will lose it if you don’t use it!
What do you think? Do you think AI is an asset or do you think it’s the thin end of the wedge?

Spot the difference!. The top picture is from 2006 - that boy will be a grown man now - the bottom picture is from just a few months ago but there is not a lot of difference apart from that. However, life is very different from almost 20 years ago. Social media now is a huge part of life as are online courses, meetings, shopping and the latest trend to hit us AI! They all have their place- but my point is that tradition, consistency and physical interaction to me are the backbone of relationships - we are still human beings - not virtual lookalikes and in spite of all the amazing technology - you can't beat being with people face to face, having a laugh, creating lasting memories and helping them progress. Still going strong 2006 to 2025

I have been thinking recently of the importance of two little words ‘Thank you’ – it takes a second to say it or write it yet it means so much.
Little things such as saying a thank you when you’ve bought something in a shop, someone lets you go before them in a queue or vice versa or saying thank you to an email someone sent you.
It’s really about saying – I see you – I hear you – I recognise you and it’s more important than you think. Think how you felt when you were expecting a ‘thank you’ and nothing happened – a bit miffed? It’s just so important.
What about when you have helped someone achieve something or helped them with a problem they have had – think about how that feels when the person says thank you – that’s really helped me.
So my first thank you is to all those who have followed me recently – it takes a second to click on ‘following’ but it means a lot to me because I feel heard
What do you feel about those two little words – are they important to you and when was the last time you said ‘thank you’ and someone said it back to you?
Love to hear – spread the gratitude around

I thought I'd tell you a little bit about myself
I was born in Wimbledon and grew up there - but...never seen the tennis!
I went to ballet school and trained as a professional dancer and had a dancing career for many years where I travelled to Spain and South America mostly. At the time I did pick up enough Spanish to get by but mostly forgotten now. So recently I started to learn it again - let's just say it's a work in progress......
I do love dancing though - any sort really - watching it as well as doing it!
What sort of food do I like? Definitely Asian Indian, Malaysian, Chinese, Thai and it's got to be a good old roast
Love to travel, love the sun and love to help young people achieve their goals

I just love education - love it love it love it! I also love sharing what I know to help others – one of the many reasons why I have worked as a private tutor for almost 20 years helping young people achieve their potential. Over the years I have helped young people pass the 11+, achieve the GCSE grade they want as well as support students with Psychology at A level.
However, recently I have had a lot of enquiries from parents who want support for their child who has been diagnosed with a neurodivergent condition such as Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and many other conditions and are in danger of dropping out of school.
So I am working on expanding my business and skills set with a course which specialises in helping people with these conditions. Young people are our future and we all want to work towards a more inclusive society.
I am really excited to be involved in helping young people from all walks of life achieve their goals and if anyone wants to have a chat with me about their child’s needs – please do get in touch

I am very grateful to Rowena who has recently tutored my Son through his 11+ exam. Rowena takes the time to understand the individual child and puts their needs first. She knows how to motivate children and is skilled in her teaching methods. My 7 year old daughter is very much looking forward to having Rowena as her tutor when the time comes.

Call now to connect with business.

There are many reasons why hiring a tutor can help your child = Here are just three
• Personalized learning
A tutor can tailor their teaching to suit your child's particular learning style as well as identify their strengths and weaknesses. This in turn can help your child develop a solid foundation in the subject under focus, build confidence and improve their academic outcomes.
• Targeted support
A Tutor can provide focused help for a specific subject or topic that your child may be struggling with which can help reduce frustration and boost confidence.
• Study skills
A tutor can help your child develop essential study skills and exam technique, such as how to organize their time, prioritize tasks, and take effective notes. These skills can improve academic efficiency and reduce stress.

Thank you Rowena for all of the support and guidance throughout the 11+ process!
My son made great progress during the year and gained in confidence. He enjoyed the sessions and found Rowena patient, clear and thorough. Highly recommend Rowena as a tutor. Katy

Rowena has been a fabulous support to our daughter, she focused her and found her weaker areas whilst supporting her learning! Lara

There's no doubt about it - the 11+ is a challenging test and you want to give your child the best chance to do the very best they can - whether it's Kent (12th September) or Medway (17th/18th September) - there is still time for some last minute practice - Vocabulary is one area that I have found with my pupils is one of the trickiest - there are lots of new words that the average 10 year old will just never have seen before but they are expected to understand the meaning of many words they don't normally come across.
Reading is an excellent way to become familiar with new words but if you need help why not click on the links and access some free resources

Not long now until the Kent test for 2024 Thursday September 12th - why not download the booklet by KCC to make sure you have everything prepared. There are two papers multiple choice - Maths/English and Reasoning - consisting of verbal, non verbal and spatial reasoning - The tests take about 2 hours in total.

Every child is different, but I recommend keeping up the practice throughout the summer, but do take some time out when you are away - a rest will refresh the mind and help keep your child from getting 'fed up' with the practice.

Here is the paper
