Over the weekend 18 MASUAS students completed the Yorkshire 3 peaks in support of the Greater Manchester Blood Bikes Charity. So far, as a team, they have raised an incredible £1800!

Manchester Blood Bikes transports blood, plasma, platelets, samples, vaccines, donor breast milk & any other urgently required medical items to hospitals and healthcare sites. All of this is done free of charge without any form of subsidy or government funding, operating solely on the generosity of individuals, organisations, groups and businesses who support them with donations and sponsorships.

The hike itself is a 24-miles (38.6km) round trip route, and includes 1585m (5200ft) of ascent which was completed well under the target time of 12 hours. If you would like to donate to the charity then please use the following link: https://gofund.me/b44e86ed

UAS EX OLIVE TORCH 🇮🇹🕊️

This week, students from all 15 University Air Squadrons across the Uk travelled to Sicily for participation in the Canadian led International Forum for Peace, Security, and Prosperity Symposium .

From enlightening lectures, workshops and discussion panels featuring outstanding academics from world institutions and our own UAS students, to engaging lectures that expanded horizons — every moment was a chance to learn and grow and understand the concepts of Peace. Students attending now have a unique perspective of the maintenance of peace and the importance of international law and how world institutions play their part.

As the sun set, evenings were filled with vibrant international functions, offering unique opportunities to weave connections and foster international relations with officer cadets from around the globe, including but not limited to the United States, Kosovo, Ukraine, South Africa, Germany, Canada, Romania, Poland and Hungary 🌍

Mr. Steve Gregory, the founder of the International Forum for Peace, Security & Prosperity (IFPSP), a Canadian-led nonprofit organization, along with Major General Scardino, the Army Commander in Sicily, extended a warm welcome to us. We express our gratitude to all the event organizers and eagerly anticipate our return.

Additionally to the fundraising and volunteering charity work MASUAS students have been completing recently, some have also been getting involved in donating blood!

By giving blood the students are helping save lives in both emergency and long term patients, by blood being used for research, or even to create eye drops! 4300 blood donations are needed every day to meet hospitals needs so MASUAS are keen to become regular donors.

This year MASUAS students have continued to support and volunteer at local British Heart Foundation stores. Students give up a day of their weekend to assist the staff in tasks such as furniture building, sign making and bucket collecting. This not only provides help to the charity but also a chance for students to get involved in the community around their universities.

This weekend, MASUAS students gave up their time to collect important donations for the North West Air Ambulance in Southport. The NWAA charity allows workers to deliver specialist and enhanced pre-hospital care to the most critically ill and injured, and transport patients to the most appropriate hospital to achieve the best outcomes for them.

The MASUAS team were also joined by the Bear Force’s AB Bear which while on its travels is spending time with the squadron. The Bear Force is a charity supporting children’s mental health by providing simple tools that encourage them to talk about their worries. While AB is with the squadron MASUAS is doing various fundraising activities to help raise money for the charity.

Over the past week MASUAS students have been helping various charities. This includes all the students donating to the local food bank with essential foodstuffs which are in much need especially at this time of year. Some students have also been taking time to help out at a local British Heart Foundation store. This typically involves building furniture and rearranging the store’s displays.

On MASUAS students get many opportunities to go flying, either as an educational sortie or as an air experience flight (AEF). During these AEF flights we sometimes get chance to fly in formation with other students. Typically this type of flight involves a transit to the training area in various formation positions before enjoying a tail chase.

Students can request to do these or during the summer we may offer ‘formation Fridays’ where on a Friday each week students can book in to fly in formation.

If this is something you’d like to get involved in then why not apply to MASUAS! You can apply here https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/university-air-squadrons/squadrons/manchester-and-salford-universities-air-squadron/ or find out more through our social channels on Instagram and Facebook.

Town Nights are well under way this year at MASUAS! These nights occur on one evening each week and typically last around 2.5 hours. Throughout the evening students listen to presentations from previous MASUAS students who are now serving personnel, perform team building exercises, and listen to a weekly current affairs topic which a current student creates and presents.

So far this year we have had presentations from ex-students regarding RAF careers such as pilot, RPAS pilot and medical officer. Students have presented current affairs on topics such as the Icelandic earthquakes, Labour and Conservative Party conferences, the life of Matthew Perry, the Israel-Hamas conflict and Trans rights.

We have also had many other activities during these evenings including a team working exercise as shown in the photos above. These improve the students abilities to work in teams and communication skills which are essential for RAF officers.

Yesterday MASUAS took part in a remembrance parade in the centre of Manchester to pay our respects, alongside the OTC and the URNU, to all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, served, defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

The service involved observing a two minutes silence, laying of wreaths and prayers from multiple religions. One of our students also had the honour of playing the last post for the service.

All of us at MASUAS are extremely proud to see last weekends drill practice pay off and subsequently being able to show our respects to the fallen.

Yesterday 12 MASUAS students completed the Manchester Half Marathon in support of the North West Air Ambulance. So far the team has raised an incredible £2194 for the charity!

From accidental injuries to severe medical emergencies, the North West Air Ambulance delivers specialist and enhanced pre-hospital care to the most critically ill and injured, and transport patients to the most appropriate hospital to achieve the best outcomes for them. Medical interventions that they provide at the scene of an incident include Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI), administering blood transfusions, analgesia, and many other lifesaving interventions. They receive no government or NHS funding and must raise over £12 million to keep operational.

If you would like to support this great cause then please donate via the just giving link below: https://www.justgiving.com/team/masuas23

During the summer break 2 MASUAS students took part in a JSAT Parachute Foundation Training Course at RAF Weston-on-the-Green. The students managed to complete between 4 and 6 static line jumps depending on the weather conditions and availability.

The course gave the students chance to practice both their static line parachuting skills as well as their kit prep as they had to repack the parachute themselves. This parachuting course requires no previous experience so it’s an incredible way to perform your first jump and develop skills.

Today marks the start of a new chapter for a MASUAS staff member. Jill has been part of the MASUAS family for 20 years and quite simply the squadron wouldn’t be where it is today without her. Sadly today is Jill’s last day working for MASUAS so all of us here would like to thank her for the excellent and important work she has done for the squadron for many years. We’d also like to wish her all the best in her retirement and say that she’ll always be part of MASUAS.

In dedication to Jill’s work for the squadron over the past 20 years a new trophy is now named in her honour. This will be awarded to the best flight within the squadron each year and will provide a strong incentive to keep improving the squadron at every chance we get, as Jill has done throughout her career.

Thank you Jill, enjoy your retirement!
