The Well Spring of Netherton is a bit off the beaten track in Aberdeen. Located on Hazledene Road, it features a Gothic-style arch with a piscina, and water once flowed from a small head spout. It is dedicated to William Rose, Laird of Hazlehead (1775–1834). Wells like this were once frequently used by the public.

We had the honour of participating in a ceremony today marking the repatriation of the skull of a young Tasmanian man who was murdered by the Shannon River and sold in the colonial trade of Aboriginal body parts 19th c. The skull was purchased and used in medical education at the University of Aberdeen. Neil Curtis, UoA head of collections, initiated the return, whereupon a formal requirement was submitted from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre. Today Andry Sculthorpe (TAC) reclaimed the remains, expressing the vital importance of restoring them, both physically and spiritually, to their own country, and to make visible racist attitudes to the study of human remains through history. A ceremony to repatriate Tasmanian ancestral remains held in University of Aberdeen collections since the 1850s will take place on 21 March.

The University contacted the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre in 2019, which led to a proposal to return the remains of a young man. This was approved unconditionally by the University’s governing body, Court, in 2020 and the Centre is now in a position to take the remains back to Tasmania where they will be laid to rest in a traditional ceremony conducted by Aboriginal people.
