Did you know that 1 in 5 men won’t live long enough to see their 65th birthday?
- Three-quarters of suicides are men
- Three-quarters of deaths linked to cardiovascular disease are men
- We’re more likely to die from cancer
- Twice as likely to have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes
- We're more likely to drink to dangerous levels and smoke.
Despite all that, men and middle-aged men in particular, have the lowest rates of engagement with doctors than any other group. The stats can’t be explained by one single factor, but attitudes around asking for help certainly play a role, and we can absolutely do something about that.
60% of men say they wouldn’t bring up concerns about prostate cancer for fear of having a rectal exam. We laugh and joke about the glove and lube and default to crude banter in a way we never would about female health.
Oakwood founder Terry Strather asks: Are you ‘man enough’ to admit to yourself that one day, things will probably go wrong mentally or physically? None of us are superhuman and we are no different to every other man out there.
We might convince or delude ourselves that ‘manning up’ and not talking about worries is all rather stoic, a way to maintain dignity, independence and heroic toughness.
We need to get over ourselves.
Yes it might be scary and uncomfortable, but we are literally dying from embarrassment.

If you’re finding it hard to get or stay motivated right now, don’t beat yourself up.
We know that habits, routine and control help reduce psychological stress, but doing more of the things that give you so-called ‘dopamine hits’ isn’t the answer. Here's why...👇

Did you know that 'Blue Monday' isn't a real thing? Today is apparently the saddest day of the year when most of us will feel at our lowest.
But it isn't even real!
It was a marketing campaign from a travel company trying to get us to book more holidays. Even though we’ve known it’s not real for years, the phrase is still rolled out in the media every January. And that’s a worry because for a lot of people, if everyone’s talking about it, it must be true right?
Mindsets or our assumptions or beliefs can actually change our brains at a biochemical level- leading to changes in how we feel and how motivated or positive we are about the future.
If you’re a manager, it’s worth remembering that the way we think and talk can have a powerful impact on not only our own bodies but can be contagious, influencing how others think and feel as well.
